Your Hosts - Mick & Jan

We are Mick & Jan Waters and we came to live in France in the summer of 2005.
Having renovated, and in some cases, pretty much re-built 3 houses in the UK, we decided to give it a go in France, so in March 2005 we started house-hunting. By May we had found just what we were looking for, although on a little larger scale than we were used to in the south of England!
Without any doubts, we quit our hectic jobs, sold our home in the UK and embarked on our new life here in rural France, along with our 15 year old, one-eyed, toothless cat, Alex.
We are enthusiastic DIY’ers and have spent the last 5 years renovating the 2 houses on the property. One house is the large 'Maison en Pierre' which has been rented out to holiday makers since Easter of 2009, and the other is the cosy two bedroomed cottage which has been let out since summer 2010.
The Vendeen Barn Restoration
We have also landscaped the adjoining cow field which is now an attractive parkland garden.  We were keen to encourage wildlife into our gardens so we have transformed an overgrown cattle watering hole into a wildlife pond that teems with tadpoles in spring and frogs in the summer.
Work is progressing well on our next project - which is the conversion of the impressive Vendéen barn that is crying out to be inhabited. So far we have replaced the tiled roof, added new windows and laid the floors. The large oak beams are now in place for the first floor and the kitchen has been fitted. This work is still in progress so you will be able to see how we are transforming the barn during your stay. (We only do noisy works out of season, so you will not be disturbed by our progress!)

In late 2010, we added a covered veranda to our barn and we have started on the main central living area - the walls are stripped back to the original stonework and a mezzanine floor has been added to give us two bedrooms on the first floor.

During the Winter of 2011 we extended the courtyard area between the two holiday homes by knocking down several old disused stone out-buildings. This created a much larger space for guests to relax in and we have kept some of the original features that were in the out-buildings, such as an old wine press and large wine barrel.
The Barn renovation 2013
peep Hole at La Maison en Pierre
In 2012 we started work on the mezzanine level in our barn - adding two bedrooms and bathrooms and at the end of the year we decided to increase the size of the swimming pool for our guests. This has involved removing the existing pool, digging a much larger hole and removing some of the surrounding stone walls.

In early 2013, the new pool was installed just in time for Easter. The new pool is larger than the original - at 10m x 5m, and also has a children's paddling pool nearby. The stone walls surrounding the pool have been rebuilt and large flagstones have been laid around the pool to finish it off nicely!

In late 2014 we started to prepare the walls of the central part of the inside of the barn - this will eventually become our living room. They all needed cleaning down and then repointing - a very long and boring job, but the walls look so much better now! We have also built a third bedroom into the back of the barn and should be putting the glass in to the main barn doorway at the end of the year.

During 2015 and 2016 we have installed the main staircase in the centre of the barn, added the huge glass windows and doors to the front of the barn, finished the new bedroom on the ground floor and started to decorate throughout. The concrete floor is laid in the centre of the barn - with underfloor heating throughout! Nearly ready to lay the floor tiles now!
